小組曲《星の島》は、髙橋喜治によって1991年にピアノ連弾組曲としてその初稿が書かれた後、数度にわたり改訂され、更にこの管弦楽化の後にも若干の改訂が為されている。本作では全5曲であるが、初稿では全6曲構成であり、巻頭の小序曲は全く別の曲であった。一曲削除し、新たな小序曲を加え、大幅な改訂が為された最初は2001年で、その年の11月に東郷まどか・奈良英子両氏によって改訂初演が為されている（⇨
演奏会記録）。管弦楽ヴァージョンである本作は、その改訂稿に基づくものであるが、管弦楽化によって生じた新たな要素の幾つかを連弾譜に反映させ、更に改訂を加えた最新のピアノ連弾版は、本作のピアノ連弾リダクションであるとも言える。
Overview After the first draft of “L'ISOLA DELLA STELLA” Suite Piccola per Piano a 4 mani
(Small suite for a piano with 4 hands “The Island of Star”) was written by 髙橋 喜治: YOSHIHARU TAKAHASHI
in 1991, it was revised several times, and even after this orchestral version, some revisions were made. This work has a total of five tunes, but the first draft had a total of six tunes, and APERTURA IN MINIATURA
(SMALL OVERTURE) at the beginning of the suite was a completely another tune. The first major revision was made in 2001, with one tune deleted and a new APERTURA IN MINIATURA
added, and the revised premiere was performed by 東郷 まどか: MADOKA TŌGŌ
and 奈良 英子: HIDEKO NARA
in November of that year (⇨ Concert record ). This orchestral version is based on that revised draft. And the latest a piano with 4 hands version, which has been further revised and reflects some of the new elements that arose from the orchestration. It can also be said to be a piano 4 hands reduction.

①《星の島》の解題
“星”は天使の喩えでもあり、“島”は異次元世界（四次元時空連続体である俗世から離脱した視えない聖なる領域）の喩えでもあるのです。
些細な日常生活の中に時折訪れる厭世観の中で発想されたのでしたが、その作曲は、些細な日常性が異次元世界において尚一層活き活きと息づいていくかのような体験でした。
①Explanation about the title “The Island of Star”
"Star" is also a metaphor for an angel, and the "Island" is a metaphor for a different dimension world (an invisible sacred realm separated from the mundane world of the four-dimensional space-time continuum).
The idea was born out of the pessimistic outlook that sometimes arises in trivial everyday life, but composing the piece was an experience in which the trivial everyday life seemed to come alive even more vividly in a different dimension.

Ⅰ 小序曲
ニ長調の主音のバスのリズム・オスティナート上で中世の賛美歌に基づくテーマが奏されます、冒険の始まりのように。続くバスのリズム・オスティナート上で、今度は小序曲に続く各4曲のテーマが断片的に立ち現れては消えて行きます、走馬燈のように。再び聖歌が現れ、賛美の高揚の果て、消えやらぬ冒険的予感の内に切れ目なしで Ⅱ に続きます。
Ⅱ 子守歌〜ゆれるおしゃれなみの虫ちゃん〜
この曲の解釈に当っては、副題にある“みの虫ちゃん”は、きっとイタリア語の訳の方がピンとくるに違いない、と想います。愛らしい眠り姫の見る夢はどんな夢？
Ⅲ ロンド〜太陽のうた〜
明るい陽射しの下、眠りから目覚めて踊り出す生命。生命を育む“太陽”への賛美。歓喜の歌。
Ⅳ ラメント〜悲しいべーモール〜
時には悲しみも…。移ろいゆく心...。嘆き。
Ⅴ ワルツ〜海と私〜
最後は、“私”と“海”とのワルツです。
②About each tunes
Ⅰ: APERTURA IN MINIATURA
The 1st tune: SMALL OVERTURE
A theme based on a medieval hymn is played over a D major tonic bass rhythm ostinato, like the beginning of an adventure. On the bass rhythm ostinato that follows, the themes of each of the four tunes following the small overture appear and disappear in fragments, like revolving lantern. The hymn reappears, continuing seamlessly into Part II, at the end of the exaltation of praise, with an unquenchable sense of adventure.
Ⅱ: NINNA NANNA - PSICHE carina ed alla moda -
The 2nd tune: LULLABY - cute and fashionable PSYCHE (the bagworm) -
When interpreting this tune, I think that the Italian translation of the subtitle "Minomushi-chan"(the bagworm) would definitely make more sense. What kind of dreams does the adorable Sleeping Beauty have?
Ⅲ: RONDO - Canto del Sole -
The 3rd tune: RONDO - Chant of the Sun -
Under the bright sunlight, life awakens from sleep and begins to dance. Praise for the “sun” that nurtures life. A chant of joy.
Ⅳ: LAMENTO - b-moll triste -
The 4th tune: LAMENTO - sorrowful B♭ minor -
Sometimes there is sadness... a changing heart... and lament.
Ⅴ: VALZER - Il mare ed io -
The 5th tune: Waltz - the Sea and I -
The last tune is a waltz between “I” and “the Sea.”
